Admission Direct from High School

 

You can be admitted to many Dalhousie programs directly from high school. The general admission requirements are:

 

  1. Completion of secondary school (i.e. Grade 12) with a minimum overall average of 70% in your final year;

  2. A final grade of at least 70% in Grade 12 English; and,

  3. Successful completion of relevant program prerequisite Grade 12 courses (see below).

 

The subjects required for admission to various programs are listed below, as well as the minimum required Grade 12 averages. Admission to some programs at Dalhousie is competitive; meeting the minimum entrance average does not guarantee admission. Normally, 70 per cent or higher is necessary in all required subjects for early admission.

1  Students applying to Music are also required to demonstrate proficiency as instrumental or vocal performers in an audition/interview, and knowledge of the basic rudiments of music theory (equivalent to grade II theory, Royal Conservatory of Music) and aural dictation through written diagnostic tests.

Students from Quebec:
Students attending high schools offering Grade 12 must meet the same distribution and average requirements outlined above. Students enrolled in CEGEP must have at least one year of a D.E.C. (12 courses, not including 109-level Phys. Ed.) with a minimum 70 per cent average. Students with two years of the D.E.C. with an average of 65 per cent will be considered for admission and transfer credits.

 

Students from the United States:
A strong standing in Grade 12 (B average), and a minimum combined score of 1650 on SAT (1100 on old SAT I) are required. ACT resultes are also acceptable with a composite score of at least 23 and with no individual score less than 20. See program pages and guidelines above for required Grade 12 subjects.
