Montessori
Developed by Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952), this method encourages a natural learning environment where the learner sets the pace and course of study.
School in the home (Traditional Homeschooling)
Literally, this method takes the public school approach to teaching and learning. For more information about what your local school is doing contact your Regional Education Officer. In Nova Scotia, that is Mr. David White. He may be reached at (902)893-5890 or whited@gov.ns.ca. Other options would include full course programs such as A Beka and Bob Jones.
Unit Studies
Many subjects are addressed using one activity. For example, a ride on the Halifax-Dartmouth Ferry studies geography (where things are in our community), math (cost of trip vs cost of walking or driving across the bridge/# of people on board, time), vocabulary (topside, windward, lee, port, starboard, captain, crew, wash, wake, jetty, board, disembark, commissionaire, terminal, etc...), history (of the Halifax Harbour), physics (principles of water and propulsion), health (what is in the water around the ferry terminals and why you do not want to swim in that; also why should we keep water clean) and safety (PFD - Personal Floatation Device, Kisbie Ring, Coast Guard, etc...)
