Second Hand Sale FAQ
When can I drop off my materials for the sale?
Items may be dropped off at the Dartmouth Sportsplex on Friday. June 4th, 2010 between the hours of 1:00 - 5:00 PM or on Saturday June 5th, 2010 between the hours of 8:00 - 9:00 AM.
When does the sale start?
Second Hand Sale will be open from 10:00 AM until 12:00 NOON. Leftover items will be re-boxed for pickup between 2:00 and 3:00 pm. Any materials not picked up by 3:00 pm will be given away or donated to the Morning Star Children's Home school in Chiclayo, Peru.
How will payment work?
There will be 2 payment stations with 2 volunteers at each station. One volunteer will remove the tags from the items and the other volunteer will add up the total sales. NSHEA members whose purchases exceed $30.00 may pay by cheque. All other payments must be cash.
What can I bring for sale?
Any items which are remotely educational, including books, games, puzzles, art supplies, videos, audio tapes, CDs and records, software, globes, posters, collections, musical instruments, etc. We cannot accommodate groups with large numbers of the same books.
Can I bring stuff my neighbour wants to sell?
Yes, we will sell anyone’s educational items, with the exception of those who have large volumes of duplicate books.
Does it cost me anything to sell my materials?
Yes, 12% of actual sales are kept to help defray costs, plus $.65 for envelope and postage to mail your cheque. We do not have enough volunteers to distribute sales proceeds on the sale day, but every effort will be made to have cheques mailed within 4 weeks of the sale.
How do I determine pricing?
All items must be priced in whole dollar amounts - NO CENTS! If an item is not worth a dollar, bundle it with another item or label it “give away” and leave it at the catalogue table. Not having to give small change will get everyone through the pay stations much faster. Most people sell current used texts for about 1/2 to 2/3 the original price. Outdated editions are 1/4 or less. Non-text items are priced as you would expect for a yard sale.
What do we need from you?
We need each item (or bagged set) clearly labeled. We cannot accept a box labeled “all items $1 each” as the items will be removed from the box and there will be no record of who is selling the item.
How do I get my unsold items back?
Volunteers will pack your unsold items in boxes and have them ready for pickup at the sale area between 2:00 and 3:00 pm. Any item not picked up by 3:00 pm will be given away or thrown away. Volunteers scheduled to work elsewhere during the pickup time should make alternate pick-up arrangements.
What if some of my items go missing?
NSHEA takes reasonable precautions, such as asking shoppers to leave all bags, carriages, etc at the door, but cannot be responsible for missing items.
We need four things from you and cannot accept your materials without them:
- An easily removed price tag on card stock (i.e. a 3x5 inch index card) attached top and bottom with masking tape. This tag must be removed at the time the item is purchased. (Please try not to cover book titles). The format of this tag MUST be an exact duplicate of the sample below. It must include: seller phone number, item name, number of items, item number and price.
- An additional securely attached label (masking tape or paper is fine) as a back up in case the price tag is knocked off accidentally. To avoid covering vital product information, this back up label can go on the back of the book or inside the front cover. Again the format of this label must be an exact duplicate of the sample shown.
- & 4. Two TYPED (or neatly printed) master lists of all your items on 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Remember, if we cannot read your lists and labels, we cannot credit you with the sale of the item. Both types of identification, the index card and the masking tape label, must match the format of the sample below. This uniformity makes it easier for volunteers to sort the cards and tabulate the amounts owing to each person.
